Herriman, Utah

Herriman is in the southwest sector of the Salt lake Valley on Butterfield Creek. Twenty-two miles northeast is Salt Lake City. The town was first called Butterfield for Thomas Butterfield, who settled there in 1849. Shortly after 1858 Butterfield was renamed Herriman for Henry Herriman, a prominent resident.

Herriman shares borders with Riverton to the east, South Jordan to the north, and Bluffdale to the southeast.

Herriman is located at latitude 40°30′24″N, logitude 112°1′51″W at an altitude of about 5000 ft. It is in the Mountain Standard time zone.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 9.1 square miles.

The city of Herriman has been experiencing tremendous growth:

  • In 2006 the mayor of the city estimated the population at more than 16,000 people.
  • In 2003, the estimated population was 5,632.
  • As of the census of 2000, there were 1,523 people, 437 households, and 388 families residing in the town.

Fort Herriman Monument

This monument marks the site of Ft. Herriman built in 1855 by Thomas Butterfield, Henry Herriman, Samuel Egbert, Robert Petty and John Stocking, as protection against the Indians. The fort was abandoned in 1858, under instructions of Brigham Young, upon the approach of Johnston's Army. Some of the settlers returned a few years later and established the town of Herriman. The fort was named for Henry Herriman and Butterfield Canyon nearby for Thomas Butterfield, pioneers of this section.
